Everybody worries, but not everyone copes in the same way. Some people are adept at managing anxiety. Though they get nervous just like everybody else, it doesn't affect them or their behavior. Others get easily overwhelmed by the weight of their worries and find themselves stuck, unable to do anything.
If you’re one of those who struggle to manage their anxiety, you might wonder why you struggle more than most. And, of course, you might want to know how to deal with it, so you can carry on with your life like everyone else. But there are different reasons why you may be more affected than others, and there are different ways to deal with your anxiety.
Genetics
Genetics can play a large role in whether or not someone develops a mental health disorder, like anxiety. If your parents experienced anxiety, for instance, it would increase your chances of developing it at some point in your own life.
Certain personality types are more susceptible to having anxiety. For example, someone who is considered a perfectionist or a Type A will likely deal with anxiety due to having high standards for themselves as well.
External Events
Sometimes, events in our lives are why we struggle with anxiety. Maybe you experienced a traumatic event recently, and it’s turned your world upside down, making you more anxious than you used to be. Or maybe you lost your job or, worse, you lost someone important to you.
Your anxiety might have developed because you struggle with health problems. You might even have started a new medication, which lists anxiety as a possible side effect.
How To Cope With Anxiety
Exercise
One of the most efficient ways to cope with anxiety is exercising. This can be any physical activity you want. If you like running, go ahead. If you prefer swimming, then do that when you can. And if you’re not sure what you like, don’t be afraid to try something new.
Take a yoga class or maybe a dance class. Why not try playing your favorite sport instead of only watching your favorite team play? There are plenty of options available. You have to figure out which one you like the most.
Exercise releases feel-good endorphins into the body. It promotes chemicals such as serotonin which help promote overall feelings of relaxation and happiness. It's not just good for your physical health!
Breathe
Another effective way to manage anxiety is deep breathing techniques. When anxiety ramps up in the body, it can impact breathing patterns. You can counteract this by using your breath to calm your anxiety down. There are a lot of great resources online that walk you through how to do deep breathing exercises.
Meditation is also highly recommended. If you’re new to it, you might want to start with a guided meditation. And if that doesn’t work for you, don’t worry. Yoga is good for this too. It forces you to breathe intentionally according to your movements.
Talk About It
If, after everything, you still struggle with anxiety, then don’t hesitate to talk about it with people you trust. You can talk to friends and family, people you know will support you no matter what.
Maybe you don’t like opening up to these people, even if you know they’d take it well. That’s okay. But it doesn’t mean you have to stay quiet. It just means you have to find the right people to talk to.
